SPEEDOMETERS

A motor vehicle, which is designed for or capable of reaching a speed of 60 km/h or more, must be equipped with a speedometer, which is in a good working order.

SPEED LIMITS

A general speed limit is applicable on all roads and does not have to be displayed by a road traffic sign.
• Unless otherwise indicated by a road traffic sign, a speed limit of—
• 50 kilometres per hour shall apply in respect of every public road situated within an ‘local street’ or ‘built-up area’;
• 60 kilometres per hour. Roads that carry traffic through suburbs and across towns have a speed limit of 60km/h or higher. The speed limit on these roads is clearly signed.
• 110 kilometres per hour shall apply in respect of every freeway.
Exceeding the speed limit is an offence.

 In the Northern Territory four highways have 130 kilometres per hour (81 mph) zones. Speed limit signage is in km/h since metrication on 1 July 1974.
